The activity of Stolt Sea Farm is divided into eight large areas or departments, closely related to each other but with different functions. The central headquarters and world decision-taking centre is located in Lira-Carnota, Spain.
Hatcheries
To carry out the first and most delicate life phases of the Prodemar turbot, the company has two hatcheries, both of them located in Galicia (Spain).
Production
The company has nine marine farms, six of them in Galicia (Spain), in the areas of Lira, Quilmas, Couso, Palmeira, Muxía and Camariñas. The other three production units are as follows in the town of Tocha, northern Portugal; in Anglet, in the south of France; and in Oye, in Norway.
There are four caviar production units in the region of Sacramento, CA (United States) – in Elverta, Laguna, Wilton and Buena Vista.
R + D
Stolt Sea Farm has Research, Development and applied Innovation among its main challenges. From the very beginning, investment in this field has been the key to improving the quality and performance of the farms. Thanks to our highly qualified people, who have known how to develop and apply numerous research projects, Stolt Sea Farm is today a world-class reference company in the area of land aquaculture.
Quality and Environment
A deep respect for the environment and its clients is essential to the Quality and Environment department. Its constant work has enabled the company to obtain the ISO 9001 (2000) Quality Management certificate in 2004, for production and commercialisation, as well as the ISO 14001(1996) certificate for Environmental Management. In 2006, Stolt Sea Farm was awarded the Environmentally Sustainable Activity certificate by Friend of the Sea, a global group that is affiliated to the Earth Island Institute.
Commercial
Prodemar turbot and sole are commercialised in different sizes through major distributors and fish wholesalers. Over 40% of the turnover is generated out of Spain, with the main destination markets being France, Italy, Portugal, Scandinavia, United Kingdom and Switzerland.
Sturgeon and caviar occupy very specialised niche markets within the high standard restaurant sector, mainly in the United States and France.
Engineering of projects
This is a key department in the development of new projects which is responsible for technology transfer between the different production centres. There is continuing, ongoing innovation in design and productive processes through this department. One example lies in the use of tunnel boring machines for water inlet; such equipment being used for the first time in the history of land based aquaculture.
Logistics
With responsibility for timely deliveries to each one of our clients, this department is a fundamental axis in the chain of value from processing of the product to final delivery.
Administration and Finance
Encompassing Human Resources, Management, Accounting and Finances, this department is at the centre of the administration and optimisation of the company’s resources.
